Dog Sled Trips with the Inuit The Kulusuk dogsled tour Please note that we can book these activities for you but they are payable locally. We do not make profit on these unique excursions ensuring that the local community benefits totally from your visit. The apparently simple wooden sledge and a team of husky dogs, each attached by a line to the front of the sledge, is a living expression of man´s adaptation to his environment, the means by which, since the beginning of time, the Inuit/Eskimo have travelled to their hunting grounds and challenged even the world´s largest carnivore, the Polar Bear. The tour begins outside the hotel where the hour long dogsled team will take you down to the local village. A guided walking tour of this remote Inuit settlement includes a stop at the church and the service house (where the hunter’s wives clean seal skins). The return trip to your hotel is by jeep or by dogsled, depending on the snow conditions. Dogsled to Apusiajik Glacier This half day trip starts from the hotel and ventures to the Apusiaajik glacier where you stop for photos and hot refreshments. From Apusiajik glacier the dogsled teams will go to an iceberg filled area for another stop before return to hotel. Greenland is the only place in the world where dog sledding is indigenous and still a major mode of transport in winter and spring. In the rugged terrain it is truly an unsurpassed mode of transport since in many areas the inclines and depth of snow prevent access by snowmobiles. The Tasiilaq area has a considerably milder climate than the other dogsled regions in Greenland, therefore also a richer snow cover on its magnificent landscape. There is no better way to see this than to accept the welcome of the friendly and helpful local hunters and escorting them on the ancient dogsled routes is travel at its most breathtakingly unique. ½ day Husky excursion to Sarpagajik An easy and relaxing trip, we cross the Ammassalik fjord, mount the low hills on the North-East side and descend into Sarpagajik fjord. Stop at a point close to the meeting of fjord and coastal pack ice, called Sarpaq. Here currents in the shallow water make an icefree pool where edible seaweed can be gathered, and we can try this local delicacy if the tide is low. A hot drink and sightseeing of the packice before returning to Tasiilaq, with an impressive view of the town in its mountainous setting as we descend toward its fjord from the opposing side. 2-day dogsled tour to Tiniteqilaaq This is a favoured journey of all locals, crossing the length of Ammassalik island from South to North and arriving at the village of Tiniteqilaaq on the Sermilikfjord. The highlight of the trip enroute is the crossing of the Asingaleq glacier at an altitude between 2-3000 feet, and the magnificent views from this. The village is said by many to be the most picturesque of all, and here the use of kayaks for narwhale hunting still exists . Across the fjord lies the great Greenland Icecap. A longer but impressive trip!
